A Deuteron NMR Study of the Dynamics of Water Molecules Bound Tightly to the Phosphate Group in Dipalmitoy-Phosphatidylcholine-D_2O System

In the deuteron magnetic resonance of water in the dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine-03 O sys-tem, a weak doublet spectrum having a splitting of 1.1:l:0.1 kHz was o bserved separately from thesignals of all other water molecules in the liquid crystalline phase. This spectrum was ascribedto water molecules bound tightly to the phosphate group of the lipid (the water in the firsthydration shell). The theoretical calculations for the splitting were carried out on the basis thatthe tightly bound water molecules reorient as a whole around the bilayer normal together withthe head group of the lipid molecule and undergo rapid exchange between the hydration sites inthe first shell. The calculated value of the splitting is in good agreement with the experimentalvalue.
