The following formula of the quadrupolar relaxation rate 1/7'.. of "AN in water isderived by considering that the configuration of the water molecules in the first layeraround the Al" " " Ton is randomly altered between the symmetries T. and C.. : 1 3 21-I-3 fe'qQ '4 W. - l - - t, -=II'-l- - 11 T.. 401'(21 -I) h 3W.%W' c. r..where eq is the maximum value of the field gradient component along a principal axis atthe nucleus, W. and W are the probabilities per unit time for the symmetry of theconfiguration to change from T. to C.. or in the reverse direction respectively, and r.. isthe correlation time for the rotational diffusion of the hydration complex.
