Luminescent Lifetimes and Decay Processes of Hetero-Nuclear Relaxed Excitons [ClI~(V_k)+e] in KCl:I and RbCl:I

Lifetimes, emission yields, and their temperature dependence of the BG emissionfrom localized excitons with the configuration of [ClI I-el are investigated in KCI:Iand RbCl:I from 1.9 K to 30 K. Below 4 K, the emission in KCI:I decays with two ex-ponential components : r. - 8.0 ms and r. - 120 ps. In raising temperature, T. decreasesrapidly to approach a constant value - 170 qs, while r. remains constant up to - 9 Kwhere this component vanishes abruptly and is replaced by an appearance of adelayed 'build-up'. Similar results are obtained in RbC1:I. Analysis is made in termsof phonon-induced transitions among zero-field-split triplet sub-levels. Concerningthe spin-lattice relaxation mechanism, importance of ralaxation process of Orbachtype is suggested in place of the one-phonon direct process which has been successfulfor the m-emission in Kl.
