Photoemission Spectroscopy of Electronic Structures of Cu_<1.8>Mo_6S_<7.6> with Synchrotron Radiation

Photoemission spectra have been measured on clean surfaces of Cu...Mo.5S... singlecrystals with use of synchrotron radiation. Three structures are resolved at E. (bind-ing energy from the Fermi level) = 0.3 - 0.4, 1.1 and 2.9 eV. The structures at E.= 1.1and 0.3 - 0.4 eV have shown remarkable resonance effect above the Mo 4p core exci-tation threshold and are assigned to the Mo 4d states. On the other hand, the struc-lure at E.=2.9 eV has revealed an appreciable resonance effect around the Cu 3pcore excitation region, which suggests that it is due to Cu 3d states. The absence ofthis type of resonance for the structures at E.= 1.1 and 0.4 eV shows that the hybridi-zation of Cu 3d states is negligible in small E. region. Besides, the states around E.5 eV are dominated by the S 3p states with a noticeable hybridization with the Mo4d and Cu 3d states.
