New Numerical Method for Solving Eigenvalue Problems Described by Coupled Second-Order Differential Equations

A systematic iteration scheme is presented to zaurnerically solve the eigenvalueproblem described by a coupled set of second-ordevr differential equations underthe boundary conditions that the solution is localize<J near the origin. The nxethodconsists of the applicatiott of Newtoza's iteration scheme to the shooting method. Attseful analytical expression for the correction to th?: trial eigenvalue is obtained.Application is made for two examples, simple har:monic oscillator and elc:ctro-magnetic drift-wave in a finite-77 plasma in a sheared ?n'agnetic field, to dennonstratea remarkable stability, efficiency and accuracy of the method. In the latter example,reduction of the CPU time by factor 20-30. is obl:ained as compared with thestandard simplex method.
