Kinetic formulation for linear mode analysis of low frequency shear Alfv<Snmode in low-/? r>Iasma is r>resented. Slab geometry is used with densit>', tempera.ture and flow velocity' var>'inn in the ,r-direction, and the maunetic shear producedb>' r>arallel current is assumed to be sufficientlv weak. Intenral equation represen-tation in wavenumber sr>ace is used in order to take full account or the finiteu>'roradius and Landau resonance effects. The general formulas derived areanrlied to two Ions wavelenuth unstabilities b>' reducin: intenral equations todifferential equations in real space; one is the localized drift-Alfv<Sn mode insta-bility caused by current density and the other the Alfv<Bn mode instability due toion velocity shear. For the former case, our analysis shows necessity of kineticeffects for instability to occur; for the latter, the lowest order finite gyroradiuseffect on the stability criterion is investigated.
