Three-dimensional nonlinear Schr6dinger equatiorn for an electrostatic ion cyclotronwave coupled to an ton acoustic wave is derived with the use of the reductiveperturbation method. Electrons are assumed to obey the Boltzmann law under theinfluence of the electrostatic potential. Cold fluid equatuons are used for the IOIIS.Instability of a plane electrostatic ion cyclotron wave against a two-dimensionalmodulation is investigated and the unstable regiorns are graphically plotted in thewavenumber space.
