Hot Carrier Instability in a Magnetic Field

Hot carrier instability associated with the negative differential conductivity in a transverse magnetic field is discussed with emphasis on its marked differences from the instability when not under the magnetic field. The condition for the instability is considerably changed by the presence of the magnetic field, because the current is not parallel to the electric field and the negative differential conductivity has to be defined differently from the usual case. generally, a system in the magnetic field becomes unstable more easily than a system not in the magnetic field does. Under a strong magnetic field, even a weak non-linearity in the current-field characteristic sometimes can bring about the instability. The domain structure expected in the present case and experimental facts relevant to the present theory are also discussed.
