Properties of strongly coupled electron-lattice systems are studied ; it is the main purpose of this paper to examine the interrelation between hopping and wave-like motions. At sufficiently low temperatures, the motion of such systems is predominantly wave-like and becomes that of a polaron in a general sense. The effective mass of the motion increases exponentially with the coupling constant if the interaction is strong, whereas it is proportional to the fourth power of the coupling constant in polar crystals of intermediate interaction as shown by Landau and Pekar. At moderate temperatures, the motion of the system is partially wave-like and partially hopping. Mobility tensors and Hall coefficients of such systems are calculated under assumptions which may be fulfilled in the strong coupling cases.
