Methods of calculating the core energy and the Peierls-Nabarro stress of a dislocation are developed. They are applied to an example; the edge dislocation with the slip plane (110) and the Burgers vector α[11^^-0] in NaCl-type ionic crystals. Interionic forces are assumed to be the coulomb force and the Born-Mayer repulsive force between nearest neighbors. The resulting values of the critical strain range from 2×10^<-3> to 6×10^<-3>.
