Dielectric and X-Ray Studies of KNO_3-Series Mixed Crystals

First the dielectric properties of rubidium-potassium nitrate mixed crystals were investigated. From the X-ray measurement, the D-E hysteresis loop observation, and the dielectric constant measurement, these Rb_xK_<1-x>.NO_3 mixed crystals, of which there may exist a mixing limit at some molar ratio between 0.52 and 0.56, were found to be also ferroelectric in the phase III on cooling alone, as in pure KNO_3, in contrast to the case of (NH_4)_xK_<1-x>NO_3. Next the results were discussed of the temperature dependence of lattice parameters measured by a high temperature X-ray powder diffractometer in relation with the phase transition behavior in KNO_3, Rb_<0.23>K_<0.77>NO_3, and (NH_4)_<0.39>K_<0.61>NO_3. In every substance, a marked shrinkage of the unit cell was seen corresponding to the appearance of the ferroelectricity. From the obtained results, the discussion was made of the ferroelectric behaviors of the KNO_3-series mixed crystals.
