To measure the temperature dependence of the principal refractive index by the minimum deviation method, a furnace was constructed and it was mounted on the turn table of a spectrometer. The principal refractive index can be measured directly by using a polarizer plate inserted in the optical path and at temperatures between 20℃ and ca 500℃ by this furnace. The temperature dependence of the principal refractive indices of an anisotropic crystal (orthorhombic KNO_3) was measured by this method. The sample used for this measurement was crystal prism whose axis is parallel to one of the crystallographic axes and the bisecting plane of the vertical angle is parallel to (100) or (001) plane.
