A New Ferromagnetic Phase in Mn-Zn Alloy System

Ferromagnetism in the Mn-Zn system was first observed by Nowotny and Bittner; the alloys containing about 30 atomic % Mn became ferromagnetic at room temperature if quenched from high temperatures. Collaborators of the present authors proved that the carrier of this ferromagnetism is the metastable ε' phase which has an ordered h. c. p. sttucture. Later the present authors fund another ferromagnetic phase in a composition range near 60 atomc % Mn. This is the β phase having an ordered b. c. c. structure of CsCl type. It is stable only at high temperatures and exhibits ferromagnetism at room temperature if the specimen is quenched into water. The present note deals with the third ferromagnetic phase which contains 50 atomic % Mn, having also the CsCl-type structure. This phase was found to be stable at room temperature although not described in the phase diagram previously establisbed. Detailed studies of the phase diagram are now in progress and will be published elsewhere. This ferromagnetic phase extends from 50 to 54 atomic % Mn, being stable below 200℃. It will be referred to as the β_1 phase because of its similarity to the β Phase. A high-temperature phase in this composition range is the ε phase. If an alloy contaning 50 atomic % Mn was annealed at 600℃, a homogeneous ε-phase specimen was obtained. It was transformed into the β_1 phase if annealed at 150℃ for a few days after having been powdered by filing. The filing was found to be effective in accelerating the rate of transformation. The X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the specimen consisted of only the β_1 phase having the CsCl-type structure (a=3.07Å).
