On the Magnetic Transition in Cr-Rich Cr-Fe Alloys

It has been established from the neutron diffraction analvses that Cr metal shows an antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition and below its Neel point the magnetic spins of band electrons are modulated sinusoidally with a wave vector which is incommensurate with an atomic lattice vector. Theoretical studies have essentially explained the observed magnetism of pure Cr in the Hartree-Fock approximation by assuming a reasonable band structure and a Fermi surface. Due to these theories, it may be expected that the magnetic ground state of itinerant electrons in Cr metal changes from a sinusoidal or belical arrangement to the othr one if its electronic structure is varied in some way. The present study was undertaken in order to know the infiuences of additional element on the magnetism of Cr metal. Present results were shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In these figures, one must notice that discontinuities in magnetic susceptibility and in thermal expansivity were detected on the alloys of Fe content more than 2 at. %. The discontinuties may possibly correspond to the Neel points though the transitions seem to be of the first kind. For the interpretation of the present results, one must take into account the two following possibiiities. The first is that the first kind of magnetic transition in Cr-Fe alloys corresponds to the change of magnetic structure associated with the variation of electronic structure due to additional Fe metal.
