Effect of Nitrogen Source and Light Conditions on ^<14>C-Behavior of ^<14>C-[U]-Sucrose, ^<14>C-[U]-Asparagine, and ^<14>C-[U]-Serine Introduced to Leaf of Rice and Sorghum Plants

For the study of the ^<14>C-behavior of introduced ^<14>C-compounds, ^<14>C-[U]-sucrose, ^<14>C-[U]-asparagine, and ^<14>C-[U]-serine were introduced from the tip of the leaf at the vegetative growth stage of rice and sorghum plants, which were grown with NH_4-N or NO_3-N, and under light or dark conditions. The results obtained were as follows. 1) Pattern of ^<14>CO_2 release rate was similar between light-light (indicating light conditions before and after ^<14>C-compounds were introduced) and dark-light conditions, and between light-dark and dark-dark conditions, but different between light-light and light-dark conditions and between dark-light and dark-dark conditions, irrespective of crop species. Thus, ^<14>CO_2 release rate was strongly affected by the light conditions after introduction of the ^<14>C-compounds. 2) Since the ^<14>CO_2 release rate of rice was higher than that of sorghum under the light condition, it was assumed that sorghum was able to reassimilate CO_2 which was released by respiration in the cells. 3) ^<14>CO_2 release from introduced ^<14>C-sucrose and introduced ^<14>C-asparagine was not affected by the nitrogen source, but ^<14>CO_2 release from ^<14>C-serine was larger to some extent when NO_3-N was applied than when NH_4-N was applied.
