Possible mutagenic effects of 50 Hz sinusoidal magnetic fields (MFs) were estimated using bacterial mutation assay. Mutagenic potential of MFs of up to 40 mTesla (1 T = 10,000 Gauss) was not detected by the bacterial mutation assay using Escherichia coli WP2 uvrA and four strains of Salmonella typhimurium (TA98, TA100, TA1535, TA1537) , either in the pre-incubation method or in the plate incorporation method. This suggested that 50 Hz, up to 40 mT MFs does not cause base substitutions or frame-shifts in bacteria.
