A new meson, λ^0, which interacts only with the Λ particle is introduced to explain the mass difference between the Λ particle and the nucleon. The requirement that the self-energy of the Λ particle be positive restricts the type of λ^0 meson to three possibilities, V(ν), V(t) or PS(ps). Some properties of the λ^0 meson as well as ideas for possible experimental verification of its existence are discussed.
