Human alveolar bone-derived (HAB) cells were obtained from alveolar bone fragments of young (10-18 years old) and old (50-75 years old) patients. The MMP-1 mRNA expression of the young HAB cells appeared earlier than the old cells after seeding. Collagenase activity of the young cells was greater than that of the old. On the contrary, the TIMP-1 mRNA expression was detected at 1 h after seeding in both cells, and the expression of the old cells was slightly higher than the young. Collagenase inhibitor activity of the old cells was greater than the young. The MMP-1 expression and collagenase production were significantly stimulated by IL-1, and the old cells were markedly affected than the young. The TIMP-1 expression and the inhibitor activity were not effected by IL-1.
