6. The effects of TGF-b1, IGF-I, PDGF-BB and EGF on cell growth and alkaline phosphatase activity using cells derived from the alveolar bones of old and young humans

This study investigated age-related effects of the use of growth factors on cell growth and ALPase activity in human alveolar bone derived (HAB) cells. Upon the addition of each growth factor, the cell growth in the old group was stimtulated, whereas that in the young group was unchanged. The ALPase activity in the young group increased significantly, whereas that in the old group increased only slightly upon the addition of these growth factors. These results indicate that the phenotypical characteristics of HAB cells may change with aging, and conseqtuently that the effects of growth factors differ for the two age groups.
