Archaeological materials excavated at the shell mound of Natsushima in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1950 and 1955 and possessed in the Archaeological Museum of Meiji University were designated as the important cultural property 1998. Upon this designation, the Museum restored with the use of resin newly the eight pieces of pottery in fiscal 2000, whose total form was restored with plaster on the basis of fragmented pottery in those days. For this re-restoration, a subsidy from a preservation project for cultural properties sponsored by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in fiscal 2000. A slight modification was made in the position of the fragments and the way of refitting of all fragments during the re-restoration work. As a result, on the points of overall shape and measurement of the potteries excavated at the shell mound of Natsushima have been slightly changed. We report herein the results of the re-measurement executed on the seven pieces of pottery (P-22・23・24・25・27・28 ・29). The shell mound of Natsushima is located at Yokosuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture and the remains of the early Jomon age which were excavated and researched by the Meiji University team in both 1950 and 1955. Through this research, it could be confirmed that Natsushima n type pottery (the potteries with linear cord marks) and Natsushima ffl type pottery (the potteries with an incised pattern) each were unearthed from a different layer. Just before this research, these two types of pottery were considered to represent the differences of tradition, namely of the northern and southern traditions, respectively. However, as the result of this research, these two types were concluded to represent the differences of period, that is to say, the former II type pottery was older than the latter M type pottery. All of the eight pieces of pottery which were re-restored this time are the standard specimens of the present Natsushima type pottery. We have cared about the two points with special attention during this re-restoration work : the first point is that it is necessary to distinguish clearly with color tone the fragments of pottery from the restored parts with resin for the purpose of distinctly indicating the remaining ratio of the fragments of the whole earthenware. The second point is that it is necessary to adjust the position of the fragments for the purpose of restoring the ought-to-be conditions of refitting. Consequently, other pieces of earthenware than P-23 which has not been changed so much give us the impression of a slimmer shape than before, generally speaking. In this report, we have newly presented the drawings of eight potteries that were re-restored this time. We would be happy if this report contributes to the study of Jomon pottery in the future.
