The museum is called a social educational institution. In calling social education lifelong learning, the museum may be called an institution for lifelong learning. In short, the museum is an organization for educational activities. Discussion of museum education has so far centered on establishments run by the central and local governments or those run by the private sector. In recent years, however, university-affiliated museums have increased in number to the point where it is now time to discuss how museum education should develop. This paper looks at the dual aspects that characterize a university (-affiliated) museum - an institution for lifelong learning and a facility for common use by those on the campus - referring to the Archaeological Museum of Meiji University with which I work. Concerning the aspect of a center for lifelong studies, there are two types, one being studies that take advantage of the program offered by the museum and the other being self-study, which involves addressing the matter raised singlehandedly. My focus here is on the need to prepare a program to step up to the latter from the former. From the intra-collegiate viewpoint, museum activities can also be defined as educational activities for students. The archaeological museum is being used mostly for specialized archaeological subjects and practical activities as well. However, the former is insufficient for a variety of reasons, while the latter is fraught with many problems. In the future, the further availability of universities and colleges as institutions for lifelong learning is likely to lead to a dismantling of their existing framework. Yet, a museum will remain "a convivial place" as Ivan Illich put it and has a very promising future.
