The need for lifelong learning has long been noted. In recent years, stress has been laid on pursuing lifelong education as a specific step in opening up a university. As lifelong learning is underway in many areas, however, school education is said to be lagging most in this respect. Given these circumstances, museums, which have inherent functions as public educators, are expected to act as the engine driving universities as sites for lifelong education. However, it is also true that the know-how is yet to be defined and established for the subjects and the methods of lifelong education. Fortunately, the Archeological Museum of Meiji University has a support organization called the Society of Companions, which can work as an intermediary for the purpose. The status and the challenges of the Society of Meiji University Archaeological Museum's Companions are subject to an analysis for identifying likely types of lifelong learning through the support organization. Under discussion for comparative discussion are the Ichikawa Museum Society of Companions and that of Folk Museum of Ota City. Societies of companions are classified into two categories, " self-enhancement" and self-satisfaction." The Meiji University support body is found closer to the self- enhancement type but has a dual character. This duality is attributed to weak interrelationships among members. Mutual merits of the university and the society of companions are listed. The paper ends by proposing an outline of a specific policy line for lifelong studies through the society - the Society of Companions' Program as it is called.
