This year (1999), the Archaeological Museum of Meiji University has beendonated archaeological materials by Mr. Hiroyoshi Kawakami, an archaeologist resident in Ibaraki Prefecture. The details of 24 items in total are asfollows. 10 items of Juohdai type pottery in the later Yayoi period, eightearthen vessels in the latest Johmon period, three stone implements, oneunglazed ceramic ware, and one ash-glazed ceramic ware. This report willtouch on Yayoi pottery among the rest. All donated Yayoi pottery belong to Juohdai type, which were supposedlyproduced in Ibaraki Prefecture around in the later half of the later Yayoiperiod. 10 items were collected from two sites. It was told that eight itemswere from Matsuo of Tano-machi in Mito City, and two were from Soune ofOharai-machi respectively. Later investigation, however, shows that Matsuo is present the Adoboshisite and that Soune is the Dangouchi sites. Hence, those are to be respectivelyregarded as artifacts recovered from the Adoboshi sites and from theDangouchi site hereafter. When one positions these Juohdai type to present typology on Juohdai type,materials from the Adoboshi site belong to Juohdai 1a, 2a, 2b types, and thosefrom the Dangouchi sites belong to Juohdai 2a type. According to the debatesof recent study, Juohdai pottery has obvious regional differences of producing centers between the basins of the River Kujigawa and the River Nakagawa. In this light, most earthen vessels from the Adoboshi site were made inthe basin of the River Nakagawa, and one of those from the Dangouchi sitewas certainly made in and brought from the River Kujigawa. These donated materials could be valued as follows. All of materials fromthe Adoboshi site in particular, range from the earliest to the latest stage ofJuohdai type. It suggests a possibility that the sites are the key communitieson the lower Nakagawa basin in the late Yayoi period.
