• This piece is a discussion of archaeological materials and their display on a basis of specimens in the exhibition on the Palaeolithic held in 1996 by the Archaeological Museum. The paper traces the path archaeological material follows from its burial underground to its way into an display case and examines its nature as an object on display. Also considered is how the producer, archaeologist, curator, and viewers are involved in the given material and its background history, as well as the role the curator plays in reproducing their interrelationships in the display. As a result, the relationship between the archaeologist and the archaeological material forms a two-way dialogue (a process whereby he or she thinks independently), in which he or she sets the objective of investigation, collects archaeological data, and weaves a logical explanation of the past culture and lifestyles in line with an archaeological method. The relationship between the viewer and the archaeological material in the exhibition is the reverse form of a two-way dialogue in which he or she receives a logical explanation of the material (a process whereby he or she learns the archaeological approach). Planning and organizing the exhibition of the archaeological materials requires the curator to make sure that the viewer can engage in a dialogue with the displayed archaeological exhibit. Only then does the specific art of exhibition make sense. A dialogue between the visitor and the archaeological material on display is made available in a display narrative or an exhibition including a bold interpretation by the curator. It should not be passive. It is essential that it motivates the viewer to read. This suggests the validity and the need for a more integrated learning program using the given material archaeological material for an object lesson as a museum activity, such a mini-class or a stone tool-making session, which is closer to the dialogue between the archaeologist and the archaeological material.
