Among the materials donated to the Archaeological Museum of Meiji University we find relics excavated in Peru. These are composed of pottery and dyed/woven cloths collected mostly in Chancay valley situated at about 60km north of Lima, the capital city of Peru. Chancay culture flourished mainly in the central coast of basin of the River Chancay and extended to the basin of the River Lurin to the south and that of the River Huaura to the north. Chancay culture existed in the Late Intermediate Period between the Middle Horizon when Wari culture established influence and the Late Horizon when Inca Empire had been at the highest of its prosperity, in other words, between A.D. 1000 and 1400. The form of pottery consists of jar, bowl and bottle and they were colored with 3 different colors of red, white and black or black-on-white and drawn or pasted with geometric pattern and some different animals and plants. The image of human body having a taste like clay doll colored with black-on-white is also characteristic. Donated materials are occupied mostly with wares excavated in both Mira Flores and Dona Maria Sur belonging to Chancay culture, containing several materials as well whose excavated places are unknown. Pottery excavated in Mira Flores are composed of jars, plates and bowls and such three differ ent types of pattern as black and white-on-red, three-color geometric and black-on-white are shown. Those excavated in Dona Maria Sur are mostly crocks and some of them are polished in red or black, most of which are drawed in concave or convex lines, though parts of pattern are different. Those excavated in Dona Maria are fragments of plate-shaped pottery painted in black-on-white. Pottery whose excavated places are unknown are plates in black-on-white, jars with handle without pattern and bowls painted in white. Although we think that we can presume the period and distribution district through more detailed analysis of compositions of coloring methods and various geometric patterns, it is a big obstacle for us that materials found through excavation research are quite limited. There is no other way for us than to continue studying on the basis of limited number of materials whose strata have been already clarified, while we make further a classification on type and form from now on.
