A quantitative sampling of interstitial organisms was carried out at an open sandy beach of Karo, Tottori prefecture, on October 28,1992. The amount of 435cc sand sample was collected with a hand-operated corer. Three core samples were taken each on the lower, middle, and upper foreshores. The meiofaunal abundance was the richest at the middle foreshore (1440.30inds./100cc), followed by the lower foreshore(256.15inds./100cc), and the poorest at the upper foreshore (56.35inds./100cc). In the upper foreshore, nematodes constituted the dominant group (53.5%), and turbellarians composed the subdominant group (20.2%). In the middle foreshore, acarids represented the dominant group (73.5%), and oligochaetes (10.9%) and nematodes (9.4%) accounted for the subdominant groups. In the lower foreshore, acarids represented the dominant group(64.4%), and benthic cyclopoids constructed the subdominant group (18.9%). The Acari-dominated meiofauna on an open sandy beach was recorded in Japan for the first time.
