Rapid identification of microorganisms, a matter of great importance in clinical microbiology, requires the use of automated instruments. In this paper we evaluated the rapid screening of urinary tract infections using an automicrobic urine identification card intended for use in the detection, enumeration and selective identification of nine kinds of microorganisms. During this investigation, 392 urine specimens were presented by the clinical departments to the microbiology laboratory between 11 November, 1984 and 8 January, 1985. The numbers of isolated microorganisms from patients urines were follows : Group D Enterococci 96 (24.5%), E.coli 70 (17.9%), Proteus 37 (9.4%), P.aeruginosa 36 (9.2%) and yeast 32 (8.2%). Group D Enterococci were most frequently isolated. This suggests that the cases of urinary tract infection by Group D Enterococcus is increasing. Average testing time was 7.2 hours for E.coli, 8.4 hours for Proteus and P.aeruginosa, yeast requiring more than 10 hours. Thus testing via identification card takes only one-fourth to one-third time required with the manual method. Studies with the patient's urine show that the urine identification card yields results which correlate well with those of the manual method, the correlation being 94.4% in group I and 87.2% in group II, though it was lower for C.freundii. The urine card is useful in the laboratory for rapid diagnosis and in the clinic for effective treatment.
