The main purpose of this paper is to investigate both experimentally and theoretically, the strength of carbon fiber chip reinforced concrete lop-sided spherical shells under line load. Any complicated shell form could be constructed easily by applying carbon fiber chip reinforced concrete, because of its smooth construction process. The ultimate strength of concrete shells with irregular boundaries under irregular load, are hardly estimated if the nonlinear numerical method is simply applied. In this paper, the strength of a lop-sided spherical shell with the opening at the top under circular line load was investigated. The strength for shells with the variable thickness at random points was evaluated with the nonlinear numerical analyses based on the failure experiments. Furthermore carbon fiber chip reinforced concrete shell strength was also compared to the concrete shell strength without reinforcing. The experimental study was conducted on small-scaled shell specimens. These were made of carbon fiber chip reinforced concrete with mixed-in carbon fiber chips and without steel bar reinforcing. The theoretical study was conducted using the nonlinear finite element analyses including concrete cracking and tension stiffening effects. The ultimate strength of shells under line load are discussed based on the results of the failure experiments and nonlinear numerical analysis.
