The dynamic response behavior of shell could be disturbed with edge members and openings. Edge member has dominating effect on shell strength under uniform load. Furthermore shell openings, which could make the interior space of the shell much favorable and lighted, would bring stress disturbances on shell structures. On the other side, recent circumstances regarding increasing speed of vehicles in three-dimensional space necessitate investigation on the shell behavior under impact point load. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate both experimentally and theoretically. the strength of reinforced concrete roof-type circular cylindrical shells with edge members under impact point load. Strength influenced by openings on the shell surface was also investigated. The experimental failure study was conducted on small-scaled reinforced concrete shell specimens. The theoretical study was conducted using the nonlinear transient dynamic finite element analysis. Three dimensional degenerate shell elements with the reduced integration techniques were adopted. The strength and the cracking patterns of shell with edge beams under impact load are discussed based on the results of the experiments and analyses.
