Study on Effects of Contact Area of Load on Reinforced Concrete Cylindrical Shells

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of contact area of vertical concentrated load on reinforced concrete cylindrical shells supported by pins at the four corners, both theoretically and experimentally. The strength and the nonliner mechanical characteristics of roof-type shells were studied for different contact areas of load. The theoretical study was conducted using the material and geometrical nonlinear finite element analysis considering concrete cracking and tension stiffening effects. Nine-node Lagrangian shell elements were adopted employing a layered discretization through the thickness. The effects of contact area of load at the center of shell surface on the shell strength and the crack patterns were investigated numerically. The experimental study was conducted on small-scaled reinforced micro-concrete shell specimens. Concentrated load was applied vertically at the center of shell surface up to the final failure. The load carrying capacities and nonlinear behaviors at the ultimate failure states of shells were discussed.
