The main purpose of this study is to investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, the effects of impact load contact area on the impact strength of reinforced concrete circular cylindrical shells supported by pins at the four corners. Difference between two kinds of concrete reinforcement materials, i.e., steel and carbon fibers, was also investigated. The nonlinear dynamic behaviors and the crack strength of roof-type shells under external impact load were studied for different impact load contact area on the shell surface. The theoretical study was conducted using nonlinear transient dynamic finite element analyses considering concrete cracking and tension stiffening effects. Twenty-node iso-parametric shell elements were adopted. The reduced integration techniques were adopted to evaluate the stiffness of the elements. The effects of impact load contact area on the crack strength and the crack patterns were investigated numerically. The experimental study was conducted on both of steel reinforced and carbon fiber reinforced micro-concrete shell specimens. Impact was applied perpendicularly onto the shell surface with increasing loads up to the failure. The influence of impact load contact area on the impact intensities at the first crack on shell surfaces and edge members and the cracking patterns is discussed.
