The main purpose of this paper is to investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, the strength of fiber reinforced concrete roof-type circular cylindrical shells supported by pins at the four corners under line load. The constructions of shells studied in this paper is carbon fiber chip reinforced concrete without steel reinforcement. The variable parameters are line load directions, line load length, load density patterns and reinforcing materials of edge members. As for the line load directions, generatrix line load and directrix line load, corresponding to each reference line on the shell surface were investigated. The theoretical study was conducted using the geometrical and material nonlinear finite element analyses including concrete cracking and tension stiffening effects. The experimental study was conducted on small scale carbon fiber chip reinforced micro-concrete shell specimens. Line load was applied vertically on the central line of the upper shell surface until the final failure occurred. The cracking patterns and ultimate strength of shells influenced by each line load parameter are discussed based on the results of the numerical analysis and failure experiments.
