Study on Effects of Impact Load on R/C Cylindrical Shells with Intermediate Supports

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, the effects of impact Load on reinforced concrete cylindrical shells with the intermediate supports. The strength and nonlinear dynamic behaviors of roof-type shells supported by pins at two intermediate points on each straight edge beam, were studied. The theoretical study was conducted using the nonlinear transient dynamic finite element analyses including concrete cracking and tension stiffening effects. Three dimensional iso-parametric shell elements with 20 nodes are adopted. The elements are evaluated with the reduced integration techniques. In these analyses, the effects of concrete material properties, shell thickness and edge members on the strength of shells were investigated. The exprimental study was conducted on reinforced micro-concrete shell specimens. Those were loaded with impact on the center of shell surface to failure. The impact intensities at the first crack on shell surfaces and edge members, the failure mechanism and cracking patterns influenced by material and geometrical conditions of shells are discussed in this paper.
