Study on Strength of R/C Roof-Type Cylindrical Shells Pin-Supported at Corners under Impact Loading

This paper reports the strength and nonlinear dynamic behaviors of reinforced concrete roof-type circular cylindrical shells supported by pins at corners under impact loading, which are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The experimental study is conducted on reinforced micro-concrete small-scale shell models. These were pin-supported at the corners and were loaded with impact on the center of shell surface to failure. Two different sizes of edge members with edge arches and edge beams, are considered and the effects of these members under the pin-supported conditions are investigated. The theoretical study is conducted using nonlinear transient dynamic finite element analysis including concrete cracking and tension stiffening effects. Three dimensional iso-parametric shell element with 20-nodes is adopted. The elements are evaluated with the reduced integration techniques. Under impact loading, the strength and the cracking patterns of reinforced concrete cylindrical shells are influenced by edge member stiffness with pin-supports. The failure mechanism of shell structures is discussed by both failure experiments and nonlinear finite element analyses.
