Study on Effects of Point Load Position on Reinforced Concrete Circular Cylindrical Shells with Edge Members

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate both theoretically and experimentally, the effects of point load position on reinforced concrete roof-type circular cylindrical shells with different edge beams and edge arches supported by pins at the four corners. The shells were applied eccentrically with one point load on the upper surface. The ultimate strength and the nonlinear mechanical characteristics of the shell with different edge member stiffnesses were studied for different load positions. The theoretical study was conducted using the nonlinear finite element analyses including concrete cracking and tension stiffening effects. The experimental study was conducted on small scaled reinforced micro-concrete shell specimens. One point load was applied vertically on the shell surface into the final failure. The ultimate strength and the nonlinear behaviors of shells with different edge member stiffness are discussed based on the results of the analyses and experiments.
