Study on Strength of Reinforced Concrete Circular Cylindrical Shells under Line Load

The main purppose of this paper is to investigate both theoretically and experimentally, the strength of reinforced concrete roof-type circular cylindrical shells supported by pins at the four corners under line load. The parameters of the line load are line load directions, line load length and load density patterns. Behavior of the shells under line load of two different directions, each on the center line of the upper shell surface were investigated. One of line load directions is parallel to the straight line of the shell generatrix and the other is parallel to the circular curve of the shell directrix. The theoretical study was conducted using the nonlinear finite element analyses including concrete cracking and tension stiffening effects. The experimental study was conducted on small scale reinforced micro-concrete shell specimens. Line load was applied vertically on the shell surface until the final failure occurred. The ultimate strength and the nonlinear behaviors of shells with variable line load parameters are discussed based on the results of the analysis and experiments.
