A Ternary CMROM with Hamming Distance Search Functions

In content addressable memories (CAM's), large amounts of stored data are simultaneously compared with an input data, and the addresses of any matches are then output. Such lookup capability is useful in many applications, including hardware data base accelerators, image processing systems, associative processors, and cache tag tables. The flexibility of CAM's can greatly be extended through the use of trits (ternary digits). In this paper, we propose a ternary CMROM(Content Addressable and Mask-Programmable ROM) with Hamming distance search functions. The CMROM can compare stored data and an input data in parallel, and find stored data with Hamming distance within a certain range("near match"). Also, the operating characteristics of the CMROM are analyzed in detail. Further, the results obtained from these analyses are fully confirmed by simulation using the circuit analysis program HSPICE.
