Spectroscopic Measurements on Heliotron E

In the Heliotron E device one of the most important problems is to understand the behavior of the impurities. We have studied the impurity behavior by observing impurity emissions with VUV spectrometers, a soft X-ray array and a bolometer array. We have also injected impurities in order to study their transport properties. In Heliotron E, we make two types of currentless plasmas; those produced by ECRH alone, and those for which the ECRH plasmas is as a target for Neutral Beam Injection (NBI). We discuss the role of the impurities in each case, including the observed impurity transport, the absolute impurity densities, and the radiation losses.
