<RESEARCH REPORT>FAST WAVE INJECTION INTO HIGH TEMPERATURE TOKAMAK PLASMAS IN THE LOWER-HYBRID-DENSITY REGIME OF JIPP T-IIU

Hard X-ray emission (30≲E≲200 keV) and suprathermal electron cyclotron emission are enhanced for density up to n^^-_e∿1.8×10^<13>cm^<-3> (n_<eo>∿2.3×10^<13>cm^<-3>) by launching fast waves of 800 MHz into high temperature tokamak plasmas (T_<eo>≳1keV) in the regime of lower hybrid resonance density (1.3≳f_o/f_<LH>(0)≳0.9) on JIPP T-IIU. The observed radial profile of the hard X-ray emission indicates that the suprathermal electrons are localized near the plasma axis (r/a_L≲0.4; a_L : limiter radius), which is confirmed by the data obtained from a soft X-ray detector array and a high resolution crystal spectrometer. In the typical case of n^^-e∿1.3-1.5×10^<13>cm^<-3> with phase differences between adjacent antennas Δφ=+60°, the rf power absorbed by the suprathermal electrons is about 15% of the net injected rf power. The absorption rate is consistent with that of Landau damping on suprathermal electrons which pre-exist in a target plasma. The increment of the suprathermal electron density corresponds to an rf driven current of∿25kA, if the effective energy of the electrons is assumed to be 50 keV. The dependences of the increment of total radiation and the amplitude of a lower side band (f=f_o-f_<ci>) on the phase difference Δφ agree well with the linear theory on fast wave coupling and propagation. The experimental data are also compared with preliminary results of slow wave injection into a similar target plasma.
