<RESEARCH REPORT>BALLOONING BETA LIMITS OF DEE AND BEAN SHAPED TOKAMAKS

Numerical studies of the first stability beta-limit due to n=∞ ballooning modes in advanced shaped tokamaks are carried out. A higher beta value than the present conventional beta scaling is expected for advanced shaped tokamaks with sufficient triangularity-indentation. The extremely elongated configuration without appropriate triangularity does not lead to the increase of the critical beta. Dee or bean shaping with sharp tip cross-section is more favorable for achieving high beta value than that with round tip cross-section having the nearly same safety factor profile. A new beta scaling for elongated ellipse, dee and bean shaped tokamaks is derived.
