Photoluminescence Spectra and Dynamics of Al3+- and Ag+-Doped CdS Nanocrystals

We report on the photoluminescence (PL) spectra and dynamics of Al3+- and Ag+-doped CdS/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals (CdS:Al,Ag NCs). The CdS:Al,Ag NCs show a broad PL band in addition to an exciton PL. The peak energy of the broad PL shifts to higher energies with decreasing size of the NCs. This size-dependence is very similar to that of the excitonic PL peak energy. Our findings suggest that the broad PL in the CdS:Al,Ag NCs behaves as free-to-bound PL. We discuss the mechanism of the donor-acceptor-pair PL in NCs with sizes comparable to the donor electron Bohr radius.
