Microscopic Structures in Co-Doped SiO2–GeO2 Glasses and Fibers

Structures in Co-doped SiO2–GeO2 glass with rod and fiber forms have been investigated comparatively to understand their optical properties. The rod exhibits marked light scattering, which can be related to grains of $\simeq 1$ μm which contain nanoscale crystalline Co2SiO4 particles. In both the rod and the fiber, Co-related structural fluctuations on the scales of 3 nm are detected by small-angle X-ray scattering. The reason why the crystal exists only in the rod is considered thermodynamically.
