The crystal structure of mitomycin C was determined by means of X-ray diffraction. Mitomycin C was crystallized in the orthorhombic space group P2<SUB>1</SUB>2<SUB>1</SUB>2<SUB>1</SUB>, with <I>a</I>=12.887, <I>b</I>=13.851, <I>c</I>=9.718 Å, and <I>Z</I>=4, and its structure solved by the trial and error method using the rigid-body approximation. The absolute configuration was determined by referring to that of <I>N</I>-(<I>p</I>-bromobenzoyl) mitomycin C. The carbamoyloxymethyl side chain participates in hydrogen bonds as in the case of other mitomycins in the crystalline state.
