The structure of tyramine hydrochloride has been determined by X-ray diffraction method using the data collected by counter diffractometer techniques. Crystals are orthorhombic, with space group <I>Pbcn</I>, <I>Z</I>=8, <I>a</I>=19.961, <I>b</I>=10.756, and <I>c</I>=8.243 Å. The structure was solved by the direct method with the symbolic addition procedure, and refined by least-squares method. The atoms constituting the tyramine cation lie on the two planes, that is, that of the phenol ring and that of the extended side chain. The dihedral angle between these two planes is 71°. The extended conformation about the C–C bond of aminoethyl group is such that the NH3+ group is <I>trans</I> with respect to the phenol ring. Half-weighted two independent chlorine ions are found on the two-fold axis with distance of 4.5 Å, having some different modes of hydrogen-bonding system for these two ions.
