The crystal structure of N-(t-butoxycarbonyl)-L-methionylglycine benzyl ester.

The crystal structure of <I>N</I>-(<I>t</I>-butoxycarbonyl)-L-methionylglycine benzyl ester has been determined. The crystal data are: P2<SUB>1</SUB>, <I>a</I>=15.884(4), <I>b</I>=5.083(2), <I>c</I>=13.296(3) Å, β=94.54(2)°, <I>Z</I>=2. The final <I>R</I> is 0.055 for 1518 reflections. In the methionyl residue the C<SUP>α</SUP>–C<SUP>β</SUP> bond is longer than the C<SUP>β</SUP>–C<SUP>γ</SUP> bond. The tendency is consistent with that found in the other methionine compounds. The methionyl side chain has the most stable trans zig-zag conformation (χ<SUP>1</SUP>=−73.2, χ<SUP>2</SUP>=175.3, and χ<SUP>3</SUP>=174.9°). The peptide main chains are packed in a parallel β-sheet structure, the torsion angles (φ,ψ) of the methionyl residue being (−110.6, 108.3°).
