Crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridine) hydrochloride was found to be an effective catalyst for acetalization of carbonyl compounds and esterifieation of carboxylic acids. The polymeric catalyst was inert to some acid sensitive functional groups which cannot tolerate under the influence of a strong acid cation exchange resin.
