<I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-Di- and <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-trisubstituted thioureas were easily desulfurized by Raney nickel to yield the corresponding formamidines, while <I>N</I>-monosubstituted thioureas gave <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-disubstituted formamidines.
