Origin of Anomalies and Thermodynamic Aspects in Invar Alloys : II. Effect of Magnetic Phase Mixing

The origin of the magnetic inhomogeneity in Fe-Ni Invar alloys is attributedto the first-order magmtetic transition, which was predicted before in the itinerantelectron model. The larse effect of the masnetovolume coupling on variousthermodynamic properties is examined in the model of magnetic mixing of theferromagnetic phase with larger atomic volume and the paramagnetic phasewith smaller atomic volume. At low temperatures the mixing is assumedto be frozen in. The mutual transformation between the ferromagnetic andparamagnetic phases due to the changes of temperature, magnetic field andpressure give additional contributions to the respective thermodynamic prop-erties. The difference betweeua the observed values of the field derivative of thevolume and the pressure derivative of the magnetization is discussed. The expert-mental results of various thermodynarruic properties in Fe-Ni Invar alloys areautalyzed in connection with the present theoretical results and are satisfactorilyexolained.
