Condensation of acyclic or cyclic β-nitroalcohols with aldehydes was examined. In the case of non-protected 1-deoxy-1-<I>C</I>-nitro-D-glycitols and benzaldehyde, products caused by aldehyde-exchange reaction were obtained. However, the reaction of 2-methoxy-1-nitropentane or non-protected 2-nitrocyclohexanol and reactive aldehydes (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and <I>n</I>-butyl glyoxylate) in the presence of sodium hydrogencarbonate gave the corresponding condensation products.
