Phosphinidenes and related intermediates. IV. Reactions of phosphinothioylidenes with cis- and trans-stilbene oxides.

Phosphinothioylidenes were generated by the reaction of phosphonothioic dichlorides with magnesium. Reactions of phosphinothioylidenes with <I>cis</I>- and <I>trans</I>-stilbene oxides gave 1,3,2-oxathiaphospholane 2-sulfide derivatives (<B>6</B>, <B>7</B>, <B>9</B>, and <B>11</B>) stereospecifically, except for the reaction of phenylphosphinothioylidene with <I>trans</I>-stilbene oxide, along with <I>cis</I>- and/or <I>trans</I>-stilbenes. The formation mechanisms, which involve phenylphosphinothioylidene coordinated by the ethereal oxygen atom, and the conformation of 1,3,2-oxathiaphospholane 2-sulfides were discussed.
